Today, we explored the section of the novella where the natives attack the steamboat. Someone dies. New characters are introduced. For Monday, make sure you've finished reading your classic novel.
Today we finished reading part 1 of "Heart of Darkness" and continued to ask questions using Bloom's taxonomy.
Over the last week, we began reading and taking notes on the classic novella, "Heart of Darkness". We've practiced a variety of note-taking strategies. We also worked on our independent reading program classic novel. At this point, students are expected to have read to the half-way point in their classic novels and to have written a rough draft for their first journal.
Today, students were reminded to complete their peer review for the Review of Form by logging in to turnitin.com and by clicking on the peer review assignment and following instructions. We read pages 17 to 28 of "Heart of Darkness" while completing a note-taking/question-generating worksheet. We then wrote some comprehension and understanding questions, using Bloom's Taxonomy (Style Guide 4). Yesterday, we attended the Black History Month Assembly. Students were to take notes on Michel Chikwanine's story of being a child soldier in the Congo in the 1990s. We will be using Michel's story to launch our introduction into Joseph Conrad's classic novella, "Heart of Darkness" (1906).
Today, we reviewed MLA citations, made sure students were registered to our class on turnitin.com, and recorded our choices for classic novels and why we picked them. We also explored the TedTalk, "Digital Tattoos and Greek Myths". We discussed why we continue to make analogies and allusions to classic stories. We also explored the idea of universal themes. Homework: Complete and submit the Review of Form assignment. Remember to both hand in the paper copy (with process work, rubric, and annotated text) AND to submit an electronic copy to turnitin.com. Also read and take notes on the first ten pages of your classic novel. Minds On:
