Welcome to our unit of literary study on the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This novel is set in rural Alabama during the 1930s. Scout, a young girl, recalls her childhood, her community, and her father's lessons about empathy, equality, and justice. Whether it's defending a young man accused of a terrible crime, calming an angry neighbour, or facing a violent mob, Atticus Finch shows the true meaning of courage and explains why it's a sing to kill a mockingbird. Learning activities include making connections to literature, the real world and ourselves, making inferences, vocabulary building, exploring point-of-view, critical thinking about conflict, character and themes, and learning, applying the essay writing process, and applying rhetorical devices to our writing .
