Unit 5B: ISU Canadian Novel Study
The Independent Study Unit for the Canadian Novel requires students to select, read, analyze, evaluate, reflect upon and make connections to a modern (1985 to the present), award-nominated novel by a Canadian author. Students submit both a written package and conduct a one-on-one interview. For more information, click on the button for a copy of the ISU package and rubric. See the websites listed below to start your search for the great Canadian novel you want to read. Learning Activities include: making inferences and connections through close reading, asking questions about big ideas in literature, using graphic organizers to compare literature, note-taking and annotating of challenging texts, listening and speaking about literature, writing reader response journals to reflect on our reading and learning.
Refer to the following pages in the Senior Style Guide While preparing your written package and oral presentation:
- Bloom's Revised Taxonomy (3-5)
- Thesis Statement (7)
- Close Reading (16-17)
- I'll Have Mine Annotated Please (23-29)
